Also called GBP, Google My Business.
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how a business appears in Google Maps and the local results, covering categories, hours, service area, photos, and reviews.
It is the most structured public record of your business, so it drives the map pack and gets leaned on heavily by AI assistants deciding whether you are real and operating.
It is the single highest-leverage free asset a contractor owns, and it is usually the one nobody has logged into since it was claimed. Categories, hours, service area, and photos all feed local ranking directly, and all of them go stale quietly.
Recency is read as a signal of life. A profile whose newest photo is from three years ago and whose last review predates the pandemic suggests a business that may have closed, which is a costly impression in a category built entirely on trust. Posting real jobsite photos on a cadence is unglamorous and it works.
It also matters well beyond Google. Assistants deciding whether to name you lean on the profile heavily, because it is structured, it is public, and it is hard to fake. If your profile and your website disagree about your service area or your phone number, you have handed every system reading you a reason to pick someone else.
