Also called Missed call auto text, MCTB.
Missed call text back is an automation that sends an SMS the moment a call goes unanswered, so the caller gets a reply instead of a voicemail box.
Most contractors miss a third or more of their inbound calls, and a homeowner who reaches voicemail dials the next company rather than leaving a message.
It is a different mechanism from an AI receptionist and worth keeping straight. A voice system answers the call and talks to the person; missed call text back does not answer at all, it reacts to the miss by opening a text thread. They solve the same loss from opposite directions and most contractors should run both.
Its advantage is that texting suits the situation better than a callback does. The homeowner who called from a jobsite parking lot or between meetings often cannot take a call back, but will answer a text, and the thread stays open so the conversation can resume later without another attempt.
The failure mode is a generic message. Sorry we missed you, we will call back is barely better than voicemail. The version that works names the business, references that they just called, and asks one qualifying question or offers a booking link, so the homeowner has something to respond to.
