What is generative engine optimization?

Also called GEO.

Generative engine optimization is the broader discipline of shaping how AI systems represent a business anywhere they describe it, with answer engine optimization as the layer that decides who gets named in a direct recommendation.

Why it matters for a contractor.

GEO is becoming the umbrella term. For a contractor the revenue sits in the AEO half, but the vocabulary is worth knowing when someone sells you either.

The two terms are used interchangeably by most vendors, and the distinction is mostly useful for spotting who understands the work. GEO covers everything an AI system says about you: how it summarizes your company, what it believes your service area is, whether it thinks you are still operating. AEO is the narrower and more commercial slice, which is whether it names you when someone asks who to hire.

For a contractor, the money is almost entirely in the second one. Nobody signs a project because an assistant described their company accurately in passing. They sign because the assistant put one name in front of a homeowner who was ready to buy, and that name was theirs.

The reason to know both words is defensive. GEO is the newer, broader, vaguer term, which makes it the easier one to sell without doing anything specific. If a proposal talks about GEO but cannot say which pages it will build or what schema it will add, it is a vocabulary upgrade rather than a service.

What to ask a vendor about it.

  • Are you selling GEO as something separate from SEO and AEO, and if so, what is the separate deliverable?
  • Which pages get built, and what markup goes on them?
  • How do you check what assistants currently say about my company?
  • What does success look like in booked jobs, not in visibility scores?
