What is call tracking?

Call tracking assigns a unique phone number to each marketing source so inbound calls can be attributed to the campaign, ad, or page that produced them.

Why it matters for a contractor.

Most contractor revenue arrives by phone, and without tracking the channel that produced it is a guess, which usually means the loudest channel gets the credit.

It is the missing half of attribution for this industry. Form submissions are easy to attribute and calls are not, so a business measuring only forms will systematically undervalue whichever channel drives phone calls, which for home improvement is usually the best one.

The setup detail that trips people up is consistency of the business number across the web. Tracking numbers on your own site are fine, but a tracking number in your Google Business Profile or in directory listings breaks the name, address, and phone consistency that local ranking depends on. Use dynamic replacement on the site and keep the real number everywhere else.

Recordings are the underused half. The value is not only knowing which channel called, it is hearing how those calls were handled, which is usually where a contractor discovers the demand was fine and the answering was not.

What to ask a vendor about it.

  • Are inbound calls attributed to a source at all, or only form fills?
  • Is a tracking number sitting in my Google Business Profile or directories?
  • Are calls recorded, and has anyone actually listened to them?
  • How many calls go unanswered, and at what times of day?
